Mandatory “25 Things Meme,” Cross-posted from Facebook

By now, if you have an account on Facebook, you’ve noticed everyone and their mother is writing their “25 Random Things” list and posting it. Well, it took me almost a week to put this shit together so I’m getting some more millage out of it and puting it here as well.

25 Things About Vincent

1. I am a total slob. My idea of sorting laundry is “Clean clothes in the basket, dirty clothes on the floor.”

2. Even though my first crush was on a male teacher when I was 10 (I think. I don’t remember exactly.) I didn’t accept that I was gay until I was 22. I went on my first date (ever) when I was 23.

3. Although it seems to be in glaring contradiction with #2, I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show almost 300 times in high school.

4. Most of my stories are told in relation to three periods of my life: “Before Katrina,” “After Katrina” and “When I Worked in Radio”. If you have a problem hearing the word Katrina said occasionally, you shouldn’t hang out with people from the Gulf South.

5. I’ve had a website in one form or another since ~1996. One of my first “personal pages” was on my friend Duckie’s domain, flamingpoo.com.

6. I’ve had a blog since 2000: noleftturns.com, nolageek.com and now queerandloathing.com

7. I ran a computer BBS from 1993 until January 2000. It went by three names: TARDIS, Peaceful Death and finally Fear and Loathing. It was hacked one night while I was working – I came home to find my entire hard drive had been deleted. The hackers later posted a log file to another BBS showing them systematically wiping my drive one directory at a time.

8. My favorite song ever is “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones.

9. I’ve broken my left shoulder twice; both times from flipping over my handlebars while riding my bike and avoiding being hit by cars.

10. Since Katrina (see #4) I am terrified of buying furniture.

11. Despite being a native New Orleanian, I didn’t touch alcohol until I was 24. (I think it has something to do with #2)

12. The level of my self-conscienceness when dating someone is directly proportional to the degree of which I like them. If you wonder why I’m not calling, it’s probably because I really want to.

13. Whenever I use white antiperspirant my armpits break out in a really bad rash.

14. I am a dog person but I own cats because I perceive them to be less needy. Someone let Plato in on this.

15. During my first semester at UNO I would wake up at 7am and drive to school just to listen to Howard Stern in the parking lot for two hours. I’d then spend four hours in the computer lab on the internet and then drive home to get on the computer. My GPA was .7

16. During the second semester I had a panic attack in Political Science before I had to give a presentation on the Brady Bill in front of the class. I lied and said I left my handouts in the library when really I just went home. I never went back to that class.

17. I’m chronically either a half an hour early or fifteen minutes late for any given scheduled event — including work. If I happen to be 10 minutes early I’ll stop off for coffee or something to “kill time” – and inevitably it will take me 20 minutes. It’s a curse.

18. I hold a special place in my heart for nerdy guys in glasses and/or shirt and ties. By “heart” I mean “pants”.

19. It’s been months since the last time I’ve done it but I sometimes take pictures of random guys on the street or metro if I think they’re cute (without them knowing, of course.)

20. Prior to moving to DC I rode my bike at least 8 miles a day. Since living in DC I’ve ridden it twice — both times to the grocery three blocks away.

21. My friend Don is the only person I’ve known personally who has died from AIDS. I met him through Marshall and we only hung out a few times on our own, but we had started becoming friends just before he moved back to Florida to be with his family. I’d see him online every now and again and we’d chat a bit about life, about dating, about being gay. After a while he just stopped logging on. I didn’t know for sure he had passed until later, when Marshall told me he had heard from Don’s mom. I still haven’t removed him from my AIM buddy list.

22. After my father died when I was six, my mom brought me to see a psychiatrist. One of the things the doctor and my mother talked about was how upset I would get when Wile E. Coyote would keep coming back to life after dying on the Road Runner cartoon — I wanted to know why my dad didn’t come back. Another thing they talked about in front of me was how the fact that I still slept with stuffed animals at the time ‘didn’t mean I was a homosexual.’ Yeah, I know. Bitch, right? I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but I knew that it was supposed to be bad.

23. I’m 34 years old and I still like to mix flavors at self-serve soda fountains. My current favorite combination is Diet coke with a splash of Orange and Root Beer.

24. My favorite color combination is dark brown and light blue. No, dark brown and mint green. Fuck.

25. It took me over a week to finish this list.

Washington D.C. Recap

Many apologies for not making timely updates throughout the last week – I never really had a chance to sit down long enough to type anything out that made sense. I’m home now… well, I’m at work. I was home long enough to see the kitties and wash my hair before I had to turn around and come up to the office.

This past week was amazing. First thing I have to say is thank you so much to my brother, Michael for getting me the last minute plane ticket. To Brian, Marshall and Julie. You really took a huge load off my mind, watching the cats like you did. Also, thanks to Mike for lending me his camera.

Mad props to my homies.

JustinI haven’t been so happy to spend time with someone in a long time, too long to remember really. Justin and I have probably talked to each other on average of once a day since we met January and being able to hug him again after all this time was such a thrill. It made the 2+ hour plane ride worth every agonizing minute. I’d do it again.

I did so much I don’t think I can remember it all, but I’ll try. If Justin or Alberto can fill in any details please feel free… I have terrible short term memory. (Probably from that one time I smoked pot… that shit’ll eat holes in your brain, I swear.)

Friday night: I got in a day early due to the flight, go me. Justin was at his production of Thoroughly Modern Millie and couldn’t join us. Alberto picked me up from the Airport and brought me to meet his friends at Recessions – an underground (literally) hotel bar near Dupont Circle. I tried not to drink for as long as I could, but his drunken friends John, Andrew and two others (James and his sister?) eventually talked me into a couple of cocktails… plus they were buying. I got home late and slept in.

Saturday: Alberto and I met Justin and Stephanie at the Cherry Blossom Festival, Steph was volunteering there and we had fun watching various displays of Japanese culture and stuff. Martial Arts exhibitions and some Japanese rock bands were present. Very cool. Justin and Stephanie both speak Japanese so Alberto and I each had our own private translator! :)

After the festival Justin had to get ready for the play that evening, and Alberto, Stephanie and I met met their friends for a birthday dinner at some mall restaurant that was very OK. Afterwards we went to see Justin in T.M.M. and we were all completely shocked at how amazing the production was. The sets were incredible, the singing was excellent and Justin looked adorable in his suit and suspenders as he tap danced around the stage. (I’m not sure he knows the extent of my ‘thing’ for suits and ties yet…. heh heh heh) Afterwards we went back to the mall for drinks. We discussed the fact that I’ve been in D.C. for two days and so far I’ve only been to bars and restaurants that were located inside of malls or hotels. Justin pledged to ‘not be as lame as Alberto and Stephanie’ (he was kidding) and he later made good on this promise.

YazuzuCase in point: the next morning Justin and I went to eat lunch at the coolest middle eastern restaurant ever: Yazuzu. The decor is inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 – one of my favorite movies ever and the food was excellent. It was even served on little space-age cafeteria trays!

I highly recommend it. Justin and I agreed that the Pita could use some improvements.. but the owner explained that he has a problem getting a consistent supply from his delivery person and he cant heat it since he doesn’t have an oven. (He heats everything with steam.) Still.. get a microwave maybe?

After that the week was kind of a blur. I visited a few D.C. bike shops, ate all the Ethiopian food I saw, did as much as I could (that time allowed) with Alberto and Justin and managed to sneak in some sightseeing between it all: The Washington and Lincoln Monuments, WW2 and Korea Memorials as well as the Native American, Holocaust and Air and Space Museums.

The metro is incredible – I want to move there just to experience a functional public transit system.

Lincoln Monument

The train ride home took almost 30 hours, as we were delayed by several freight trains. That sucked. Someone stole my toothbrush on the train. My used toothbrush. How nasty is that?

All in all I’m a little sad to be home. It was so nice to see Alberto and everyone again and a relief to know I’m not crazy for feeling the way I do about somone I met in a bar nearly 5 months ago and talk on the phone with on a daily basis. :)

I miss him already.

Run away!! Run away!!

I woke up Saturday morning to the booming sound of my friend Christopher’s voice on my cell phone: “GET THE FUCK OUT!”

After watching the Weather Channel for a few minutes, learning that Katrina was a Category 5 Huricane and remembering that Broadmoor, the subdivision I live in, is the lowest area of New Orleans (or, as my friend Marshall puts it The Deep End of the Pool I decided to call around to see if I could tag along with anyone in an attempt to get the fuck out of dodge. Long story short: Marshall, Carlos, Plato, Lydia and I have evacuated to Montgomery, Alabama and are staying with Carlos’ parents in his sister’s gay ex-husband’s semi-abandoned for-sale house. Yes, it confuses me as well. Fabulous house though.

The kitties did excellent in the car; Nary a peep out of either of them for the entire FOURTEEN HOUR DRIVE. I’m so proud of them. We stopped along the way twice, once to pee on the side of the road after no peeing for eight hours, once to to get a burger at McDonalds after not eating for ten hours.

What’s grosser than gross? Being told that Marshall “had to pee a couple of other times as well, but luckily he had a couple of empty water bottles in the car with him.”

What’s grosser than that? Seeing him pour out said water bottles in the parking lot of McDonalds.

So anyway, I’m in a Mongomery public library using the net, resisting the urge to look up porn, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. I have a feeling we arn’t going to be coming home for a few days, so I’ll have to make do.

A few friends of mine stayed home.. I hope they’re OK. All the cell phones are going crazy and it takes forever to get through to anyone, if you get through at all. So, anyway, if I haven’t been able to get through to you I wanted to let you know I’m ok and hope you guys are as well. Seeing stories like this really make me nervous.

Well, I lost Marshall and Carlos in the library, they were supposed to be in the computer lab, but they’re not, so I better go look for them before they leave me here. :)

Good luck!

It’s Been A While

My, how time flies. It’s been a while since I posted. I’m actually a year older… the big 2-8. hehe I wish I had tons to write about, but it’s been pretty slow in the life of Vincent. I had my birthday party a week early at Celebration Statio where I played hyper-violent video games with Marshall and Jason. I finally saw, for the first time, Dance USA or whatever that silly video game was. IF you’ve never seen it – run, don’t walk to your nearest video arcade and check it out. It’s like video line dancing for two. I was curious why 99% of the 20 people that were crowded around the game were asian. In between games it looked like Tiananmen Square as people scrambled to put their quarters on the machine.

Last weekend, I spent my birthday moving furniture and computers around Dan’s office and developing a nasty case of the shakes from a couple of glasses of banquet coffee. BTW, If there’s anything I’ve learned from my life and my mother, it’s that no matter how many times someone tells you they “don’t even like birthdays” they always like to hear those two little words.

The good news is… I’m going to Chicago tomorrow night. My brother, my nephew and I are driving up there to see my mom. I’ll be a big geek and try to post a “hello from Chicago” post or two. :)

Dan is hosting a VIP party for anyone who shows up (up to 20 people) at 360 tomorrow night (Friday) at 9:30. 2 free drinks for just showing up. I advise you to make it out there and say “Whazup!”

Yes… I am looking for someone to trade cars with. I have a 1991 Honda CRX in fair-good condition (CV Joints are going, no A/C, short in pass. side bright light,) and I am looking for a 60s/70s VW beetle.

Anyone?
